Huge Grading
8 Dec 2025
Kingsland Martial arts runs the largest black belt grading in NZ Hapkido history
The club was first formed in 2002 by Paul Quickenden and Aaron Hochwimmer, who wanted to bring beginner self-defence to the Auckland area. Paul runs the majority of classes, however other senior belts regularly teach portions of the class for their development.
Paul is a 3rd degree black belt with 30 years of experience.
Adult training sessions are on Monday, 7:30pm - 9pm and Wednesday, 7:30pm - 9pm
We have a structured beginners' pathway where you will be paired with a senior to guide you
We run three kids' classes, one hour each, on Saturdays between 1:00pm - 4:00pm (please call first)
Each class is broken down by age group - ages 7-10 in the 1pm class, 11-13 in the 2pm and 13 and over in the 3pm. This isn't rigidly enforced as parents with multiple children sometimes put them in the same group
Children's classes are fun-based, we teach movement, confidence, persistence/resilience and a little bit of discipline.
Our class fees go directly toward hall hire, the purchase of equipment, special events and promoting the club. All of our instructors are volunteers. See our fees page for details and payment instructions.
We train in the main school hall at Kowhai Intermediate School.
If you have other questions or need more information, please contact Paul on 027 253 3139 or email us and we'll do our best to answer.
We're a registered non-profit community club (Kingsland Martial Arts Society Inc.)
