Info for parents
Learning a martial art is a great way for kids to build confidence about themselves and their body, to improve their coordination, and to develop self-discipline. Our classes are fun and engaging without the stiff formality you might think of when imagining a traditional martial art.
What do we teach?
We teach a style called Hapkido, which comes from Korea. The kids syallbus is modified to avoid any overly dangerous techniques and focuses on skills that even smaller bodies can master.
How do I sign-up my child?
Come along to a kids class with your child, try it out, and the instructor will provide you with an application form for regular membership. Call James on 021 858 600 or email us to let us know you wish to come along.
When & where are the classes?
Our kids classes are held on Saturday afternoons during the school term:
- 1:00pm - 2:00pm for ages 6-8
- 2:00pm - 3:00pm for ages 9 - 11
- 3:00pm - 4:00pm for 12 and over
Classes are held at at Kowhai Intermediate School hall.
How much does the class cost?
We now charge on a term-by-term basis, though we allow people to pay weekly if they wish. Each term (corresponding with school terms) costs $90, or you can pay $10 per lesson. Here's how to pay your fees.
When will my child get their first colour belt?
We do 2 gradings per year, about six months apart. Inbetween these test, we give kids 'stripes' on their belt to show their progress. We do not charge any additional fees for gradings.
How do I get a uniform?
We will provide your first uniform for free. Additional uniforms can be ordered online from several places. Try Auckland Martial Arts Supplies (www.amas.co.nz) or Zenjo (www.zenjo.co.nz), or feel free to ask us to put in an order on your behalf.
