Beginner FAQ – Adult Martial Arts & Self-Defence in Auckland

I’ve never done martial arts before. Can I still join?

Absolutely. Most of our adult beginners start with zero experience. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or coordinated — that’s what training is for.

Our classes are structured so beginners learn safely and progressively.

Do I need to be fit before starting?

No. You start at your own pace.

Training will improve your:

Cardio fitness, Strength, Mobility, Coordination

Many members join specifically to get fitter while learning real self-defence skills.

What age is suitable for adult classes?

Our adult classes are ideal for ages 16+, and we regularly train members in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

You’re never “too old” or “not athletic enough” to begin.

What should I wear to my first class?

Just wear: And oldA t-shirt and shorts or track pants

We train in bare feet (no shoes on the mats)

Bring a drink bottle too

If you decide to continue, we’ll order you a uniform.

Is martial arts safe for beginners?

Yes. Safety is a priority.

You’ll learn:

How to fall safely

Controlled techniques

Gradual partner work

There’s no pressure to spar or do anything you’re uncomfortable with.

What will I learn in Hapkido?

Hapkido is a practical martial art that includes:

Striking techniques (kicks, punches)

Joint locks and escapes

Throws and takedowns

Real-world self-defence scenarios

Fitness and conditioning

It’s designed for realistic self-defence, not just competition.

I’m nervous about joining. Is that normal?

Completely normal.

Almost everyone feels nervous before their first class. Our members are supportive and welcoming, and we make sure beginners feel comfortable from day one.

Do I have to spar? (fight)

No. Sparring is optional.

Beginners focus on learning fundamentals first. You can choose your level of intensity as you progress.

How long before I feel more confident?

Most people notice improvements in:

Fitness → within 2–3 weeks

Coordination → within 4–6 weeks

Confidence → often after just a few sessions

Consistency makes the biggest difference.

How often should beginners train?

We recommend 2 classes per week to build skills and fitness steadily.

But even once per week is a great start.

Is this good for stress relief?

Yes — training is an excellent way to:

Release stress

Improve focus

Build resilience

Disconnect from work and screens

Many members say it’s the highlight of their week.

Where are you located?

We are based in Kingsland, Auckland — convenient to:

Mt Eden

Grey Lynn

Ponsonby

Central Auckland

How do I get started?
