Black Belt Grading 6 Dec 2025
20 Nov 2025
We're holding a black belt grading for adults and children on Saturday, 6 December 2025.
Kingsland Martial Arts was established in February 2003 by Aaron Hochwimmer and Paul Quickenden. At the time both were 1st Degree Black belts.
Aaron had done all of his training under Mark Metcalf in the Parnell Hapkido club. Mark is a long term instructor who was originally trained by Grand Master Lee. Master Lee presided over Aarons's Black belt grading in 2002.
Paul started his Hapkido training in the Dunedin club, training under Andy Montgomery (now 5th Dan) and Bryce Burrows. Paul then moved to Wellington and came under the tutelage of Master Callum Forbes who went on to become the head of Hapkido New Zealand in 2006 when Grand Master Lee passed this on to him. Paul was Master Callum's first student to attain a black belt in August 2000.
Paul and Aaron met while training at the Parnell Club when Paul had
returned to New Zealand. About a year later they established
KMA. James and Jamie, along with Mike Mailman, were there on the first
night of the club.
Paul and Aaron undertook their 2nd Dan
together in 2004. Paul then took some time out due to family
commitments. At the time we had just promoted James McGoram and Jamie
McFadgen to 1st Dan.
Aaron continued to run the club with James and Jamie's support before he went offshore.
James and Jamie continued to learn and undertook their 3rd Dan in 2016.
Around 2013 James and Paul established the children's program we have today with their own children being founding members.
In December 2020 we ran our first Junior black belt grading with 4 students attaining the grade.
Danny Quickenden went on to become a senior 1st degree black belt in May 2022, grading with Artur Francisco.
Madeline (Maddie) Adam's graded to 1st Dan the next year.
Paul finally completed his 3rd Dan in 2024
Along the way, the club has graded several students to black belt.
Paul is currently working towards his 4th Dan
