These notes show the minimum number of techniques required to advance to the next grade. Further variations and techniques are allowed where discussed with your instructors beforehand. This grade focuses on improving stick or improvised weapon use and defence and counter-throws.
Tan-jon breathing & pattern
Students will be taught the Double Red tip pattern, and must also practice the previous two patterns.
Self Defence Techniques
A series of techniques using joint manipulation or locks to subdue your opponent.
- Counter Hip Throw (block hip, and drag backwards)
- Double Throw
- Throw from Standing Choke
- Throw from Kick (cross-block, throw and trap leg finish)
- Walking Side by Side Throw
Stick Techniques
Basic striking and blocking drills using the short stick building on previous grade. Create a 2-3 minute demonstration showing the following aspects:
- Unarmed defence (evasion & capture)
- Counter-capture
- Use weapon to apply locks and holds
- Improvising with found weapons
Break-falling
Rolling break fall over three or four people crouched together on the ground.
Sparring
Students are expected to demonstrate three rounds of standing kick-punch sparring with light contact. Students cannot strike once in a clinch, but can utilise the basic takedown techniques, and can also spend up to twenty seconds at a time using ground-fighting techniques.
Power test
Students must break a 20mm pine board with a spinning hook kick. Can choose best leg or do both sides.
Students will also demonstrate their basic striking techniques against pads (front kicks, round kicks, punches, spinning hook kicks). The aim of this exercise is to display power, not speed – so the examiner will look for focus and technique.
